The War

This scene tells of the activities of James, Henry, and George during the Civil War.

James and Henry were in the 139th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment Infantry, Companies C and H. George was in the 78th Pennsylvania Volunteer Regiment Infantry, Company F.

139th Regiment

The 139th Regiment was called to war first to bury the dead at Bull Run, Virginia in September of 1862. 

Many of the young men from 18-24 were called to war in 1861. The 139th Regiment was primarily made up of those left behind: their fathers and their younger brothers.

James was in Company H and Henry was in Company C, along with Henry's b

The 139th Regiment was called to war first to bury the dead at Bull Run, Virginia in September of 1862. 

Many of the young men from 18-24 were called to war in 1861. The 139th Regiment was primarily made up of those left behind: their fathers and their younger brothers.

James was in Company H and Henry was in Company C, along with Henry's buddies from Freeport, who James affectionately calls the "Freeport Boys" in his letters.

From the letters, we discover that James tended to the horses, as shown in the picture above.

James and Henry mustered in on 1 September 1862. Henry was killed in the Battle of Cold Harbor, 1-12 June 1864. James mustered out on 17 November 1864.

78th Regiment

George mustered into the 78th Regiment on 12 October 1861, moved to Nolin, Kentucky and then to Tennessee. His regiment was involved in the war in Chattanooga, the Battle of Stone River, Battle of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and he was in the Georgia campaign.

At least part of that time, George appeared to have a desk job reporting to G

George mustered into the 78th Regiment on 12 October 1861, moved to Nolin, Kentucky and then to Tennessee. His regiment was involved in the war in Chattanooga, the Battle of Stone River, Battle of Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and he was in the Georgia campaign.

At least part of that time, George appeared to have a desk job reporting to General Palmer at the Headquarters of the 14th Army Corp Escort due to a disability he had incurred in the war. He mustered out on 4 November 1864.

The 78th Regiment had several reunions after the war which George attended. A picture of one of the reunions is shown above.
