Medora Belle Conley

Medora

From bits of information Barbara gleaned, Medora, the woman with the family letters and pictures, was Barbara's grandmother's best friend, growing up in Freeport, Pennsylvania. She was born Medora Conley on 24 January 1877.

Dora and her mother, Nancy, lived with Nancy's mother, Sarah, which was after the death of Sarah's husband, James, according to the census records. Dora was listed as Dora Conley in the census, but went by her father's last name, Fullerton, at school.

Medora's Parents

Nancy Conley

Nancy never married Dora's father, John Fullerton, and this was a scandal and source of shame for the Conley family. Nancy travelled to Ontario, Canada to have the baby, a fact I have yet to confirm.

John Fullerton

On 13 July 1877, Nancy had a warrant issued for the arrest of John F. Fullerton of Freeport, charged with F&B, on her oath. Evidently, this was to establish the identity of the father of Dora and to claim child support.

By the way, F&M means "Fornication and Bastardly."
